Help Your Constituents Save
$3 Billion During the Interim...
This might sound scary to some, but the 2011 session is just a year and half a way. During that time, Texans can save $3 billion* on their electric bills by thinking and acting more efficiently.
Ways to Save Include:
- Replace old light bulbs around the house with compact
 fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). CFLs use 75% less electricity and produce 90% less heat.
- To keep cool – try using a ceiling fan instead of the air conditioner. A fan uses less energy and can help spread cool air around your room.
- On warm days raise your thermostat to 80 degrees (F) or higher if leaving for more than four hours. Every degree of extra heating or cooling will increase energy usage 6% to 8%.
- Use power strips. Even when turned off, electronic and other home office equipment can continue to consume electricity when plugged into the wall. Shutting off power at a power strip will eliminate this standby electricity consumption.
- Conduct an energy audit. An important step in preparing to save energy is to find out where you are losing energy—and money. Energy audits can be conducted in homes, apartments, multi-family homes, and small businesses. An audit will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time.
- Take advantage of the 2010 Energy Star Holiday. Texans can save about $3 million during this tax free weekend.
