CONSERVATION AND EFFICIENCY OFFERS LESSON IN UNITY
Coalition has industry and the environmentalists singing from the same hymn book.
Texas Energy Report
February 26, 2010

A 10-month old advocacy organization advocacy whose membership list includes TXU, CenterPoint, Oncor, Luminant, Entergy and the Association of Electric Companies of Texas was described today as offering “a treasure trove of good information” and providing “a great public service.”

So, which well-connected lobbyists were passing out such lavish praise?

Well the first quote comes from Tom “Smitty” Smith of Texas Public Citizen. And the second one was offered by Luke Metzger, who runs Environment Texas.

Seriously.

Both were describing the Texas Is Hot coalition, developed a year ago by energy lobbyist and former state Rep. Curt Seidlits as a way to educate policymakers, business owners and ordinary Texans on ways to save electricity through conservation and efficiency. It’s run day-to-day by John King of Seidlits’ lobby group, Focused Advocacy.

King said the coalition is reaching out to homeowners, business people and has recently partnered with the city of Houston to attempt to change the way people think about energy consumption.

“Energy conservation is the easiest way to save money on your electric bill, and it’s a whole lot easier than trying to build a new coal plant or nuclear facility,” King told the Texas Energy Report in an interview today.

Texas Is Hot’s Web site offers basic tips for reducing consumption, lists of cities and utility companies that offer rebates for energy-efficient appliances and other cost-saving strategies and an “Ask the Expert” box for people to submit questions. And it’s reaching out to younger Texans by way of such social media outlets as Facebook and Twitter.

The site also has an overview of the Texas electric market and explanations of the various fuels used in electric generation, including the renewables sector.

King said the coalition is largely funded by the electric industry, but that it’s also reaching out to the environmental community because the two sides might have more in common than meets the eye.

“The industry knows that it has to meet targets for conservation and efficiency,” he said. “It’s not like demand is going to go away. In fact, it’s increasing as things like plug-in cars come on line and more and more electronic appliances come on line.”

Both Metzger and Smith said they are not formal partners in the coalition, but that they support its aims.

“It’s nice to see that the industry is getting religion, as far as conservation is concerned,” Smith said. “So we see what (Texas Is Hot) is doing as a positive thing.”

Added Metzger: “We like their message. In fact, we re-Tweet a lot of their Tweets.”
