Earth Day 2009: New Energy for America
Together We Can Make a Difference!

Today is Earth Day! Texans use more energy than any other state. However, if we all do our part to manage energy use we can have a dramatic impact on both our state and nation's energy independence...and save billions of dollars on our electric bills in the process!

Yes, Texas is hot, and we use a lot of energy, but together we can make a difference in both our consumption and our wallets!

  • Make today the day you start to change your energy habits.
  • Make today the day you start to realize the amount of money you can save by using less energy.
  • Make today the day you join the TexasIsHot movement and help Texas become a leader in energy efficiency and innovative energy use.

START MAKING A DIFFERENCE TODAY!

  • Turn off your lights (it's okay to start small...)
  • Replace all your old incandescent light bulbs with new compact fluorescent light bulbs. This can cut your light bulb energy usage by 75%.
  • Try to keep your light fixtures and bulbs clean. Sounds crazy, but dust and dirt on a light bulb can absorb as much as 50% of the light.
  • Set your water heater temperature at 120°. This is the fastest and easiest way to cut water heating bills without sacrificing comfort.
  • Set your thermostat to 78 degrees (F) in the summer and 68 degrees (F) in the winter. Every degree of extra heating or cooling will increase energy usage 6% to 8% and increase your bill. In fact, you may want to set the thermostat even higher when you're not at home, and turn the air conditioner off when you go on vacation.
  • Always look for ENERGY STAR® models when purchasing new appliances and electronics. These devices are designed to use less energy and will save you money.
  • If you have a microwave oven, this is a good excuse to use it. Microwaves use about half the electricity of a stove or oven, and cook food in significantly less time.
  • Always make sure you're washing full loads of dishes or clothes. Remember, each wash uses the same amount of electricity whether it's a full load or not.
