Trim the “Energy Fat” in 2011: TXU Energy Offers Easy Tips to Save Energy and Money for the New Year

“This year I’m going to do it” is a common refrain by many of us around the New Year. Whether it’s to become more financially responsible or shedding a few pounds, we all resolve to kick off the New Year with the right goals in place.

TXU Energy wants to help you shed the “fat” from your energy bill by putting you and your home on an energy diet. These and other tips, tools and projects will help you use less energy and save more money with practically no pain and all gain.

Just like with the traditional holiday diet, here’s what you need to know to kick off your energy diet:

  • Forget Fads

Fads come and go. Stick to the basics. To successfully diet, most dieters adhere to less food intake, healthier food options and more exercise. The same goes for energy consumption. Turn the lights off when not in use. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which are about 75 percent more efficient than a traditional incandescent light bulb, and last up to 10 times longer. Find air leaks around your windows and doors and plug them with some caulk that costs just a few bucks. Or, if you have the money, replace old energy-guzzling appliances with energy-efficient alternatives.

  • Eliminate Snacks

Most of us learn very quickly that a little bit of chocolate here or a late-night snack there can quickly add up to a lot of calories. That kind of snacking can sabotage even the best laid diet plan. But, you don’t have to eliminate snacks, you just have to replace them with healthier options.

When it comes to your energy diet, the same is true. Don’t let cell phones, computers, mp3 players and other gadgets become the energy snack that bloats your energy bill. Invest in a power-strip, or a more advanced sensor power-strip, that eliminates the phantom loads and provides the power only when the appliance is in use.

  • Portion Control

Think of kilowatts like calories. If you’re serious about reducing energy use, then you need to ask yourself, “How much do I use?” A monitoring device like the BrightenSM Power Monitor, an energy savings solution from TXU Energy, can help you see, real time, how much electricity you’re consuming by leaving the television on while nobody’s watching or running the air conditioner while you’re away at work.

  • Exercise

Touching your toes improves flexibility, but getting that heart rate up really makes the biggest difference for successful dieters. Many of our energy consumption problems are solved by simply changing bad habits and “exercising” better energy choices around the home. Consider performing a simple do-it-yourself energy audit or having one professionally completed on your house. A home energy audit is an excellent way to find out about the electricity you use, where you use it most and where you can save both energy and money.

  • Partner Up

Having a friend or family member work with you on your dieting goals can help you achieve them. The same is true when it comes to energy. So, get the whole family involved and consider partnering up with another family who’s interested in saving money through energy efficiency. Kick off your new year with a lighter energy load and heavier wallet.
